Even though domestic considerations forced Bashir’s downfall, his extensive involvement in regional issues means his departure will resonate beyond the confines of Sudan’s borders. This report explores the regional implications of Bashir’s removal and the subsequent role of external actors in Sudan’s internal affairs.

About the authors

Dr Andrews Atta-Asamoah is a Senior Research Fellow in the ISS Addis Ababa office. He has worked extensively on peace and security in Africa, including as a member of the UN’s Panel of Experts on South Sudan. Andrews has a PhD in political studies from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Omar S Mahmood is a Senior Researcher in the ISS Addis Ababa office. He has worked as a security consultant covering the Horn of Africa and Lake Chad Basin, and as senior analyst for a Washington DC-based consultancy firm. Omar has an Master’s degree in security studies and conflict resolution from the Fletcher School, Tufts University, Boston.
