Training

The ISS builds sustainable capacity so that governments and civil society can tackle Africa’s human security challenges. Training makes up a large portion of our work and course content is informed by the results of our research.

ISS training is practical and sustainable. Courses are developed and hosted in partnership with those that request training. Real-world case studies and practical exercises are used, and participants learn from the experiences of their colleagues.

Our training does more than provide technical skills. Connections made between prosecutors and police, for example, enable problem solving across departments and borders when trainees are later faced with complex criminal cases.

ISS analysts and trainers develop manuals, guides and handbooks that are informed by our research and policy work. These resources are used in training sessions and workshops convened by ISS and its partners.

Training is provided by several programmes at the ISS, on a variety of issues ranging from counter-terrorism to organised crime and preparing police for deployment in peace support missions.
