Boycotts, protests, violence and voter fraud characterised Congo-Brazzaville’s legislative elections in July. The ruling Congolese Labour Party won a majority of seats, but the election’s credibility remains clouded by the Independent National Election Commission’s unwillingness to announce voter turnout rates, and the opaque conflict which prevented voting in the Pool region.

These elections were supposed to help build a ‘new republic’ after the contested 2015 constitutional referendum. Instead, the enduring political and economic crisis threatens the senate elections scheduled for 31 August.

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Fonteh Akum, Senior Researcher, ISS Pretoria. He will analyse the implications of the legislative elections on the worsening crisis.
