View on Africa: challenges awaiting the G5 Sahel joint force

The G5 Sahel joint force will have to deal with more than terrorism and trafficking.

The first task of the new G5 Sahel joint force launched on 2 July in Bamako is to fight terrorism, drug trafficking and human trafficking in the Liptako-Gourma border regions. The remote area faces continued violence and an upsurge of non-state armed groups.

Funding is not the only challenge facing the new joint force. It will be deployed in a complex region where weak governance, local conflicts and extremism intersect.

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Ibrahim Maïga, ISS Researcher based in Bamako. He will discuss the local dynamics, particularly in the border areas of Liptako-Gourma.
