The Sahel region faces crises across multiple fronts, including the accelerated impact of climate change, rapid population growth, extreme poverty and underdevelopment. As these challenges intensify, international attention on Burkina, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger has increased largely owing to the spread of violent extremism and use of the region as a transit route for migrants to Europe. This event will discuss the current security situation and launch the latest ISS report on the region’s long-term development prospects.
Chair: Amb Jolke Oppewal, Embassy of Netherlands, Bamako, Mali

Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Head, African Futures and Innovation, ISS Pretoria
