Election uncertainty in Guinea-Bissau, Mali and Togo

How can national and international actors respond to the persistent crises in these three countries?

Political crises in Guinea-Bissau and Togo, and insecurity in Mali, make the road to elections in all three countries uncertain.

In Mali, local elections scheduled for December 2017 were postponed to April 2018. They risk further postponement due to prevailing insecurity in northern and central Mali, even as presidential elections are scheduled for July.

In Guinea-Bissau, a power struggle which led to the dismissal of the Prime Minister by the President in 2015, triggered a political crisis that makes legislative elections in April unlikely. Meanwhile, in Togo, since last August, a deadlocked political crisis around the issue of presidential term limits imperils the legislative and local elections scheduled for July.

This seminar will analyse the risks associated with persistent crises in all three countries, the challenges facing national and international actors seeking solutions, and the way forward.

Attendance at this seminar is by invitation only.
