Press Release: Launch of the ISS Nairobi Office
Press Release: Launch of the ISS Nairobi Office
The Institute for Security Studies has recently opened an office in
Nairobi, Kenya and will be holding a cocktail function on 2 March 2006
from 6:00pm at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi to celebrate the event.
This
will be preceded by an information briefing on the ISS at the ISS
offices in Nairobi at 11:00am on the same day. The Guest of Honour for
the cocktail function is Ambassador Bethuel Kiplagat, Special Envoy for the IGAD Peace Process for Somalia (pictured here with Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director of the ISS).
The opening of the ISS Nairobi office endeavours to support the
realisation of the Institute’s mission and vision of human security in
Africa. The vision of ISS is that of a stable and peaceful Africa,
characterised by human rights, rule of law, democracy and collaborative
security. The mission of the Institute is to conceptualise, inform and
enhance the human security debate in Africa through independent applied
research and analysis and to inform policy decisions, create awareness,
monitor trends, support capacity building and provide implementation
support.
Currently, the ISS Nairobi office engages on issues relating to
organised crime, conflict analysis, arms management, money laundering,
and terrorism in close collaboration with the ISS offices in South
Africa. In future, the Nairobi office will expand its engagement to
other matters related to human security.
The extension of the ISS to Nairobi emphasises the endeavour of the
Institute to work in collaboration with other institutions in the region
and build on existing partnerships.
