The appointment, by consensus, of Aristides Gomes as Prime Minister on 16 April was an important step towards resolving the current political crisis in Guinea-Bissau. The attention of national political actors is now shifting to the organisation of legislative elections on 18 November. These developments alone, however, are unlikely to guarantee lasting stability in the country unless the major weaknesses in the institutional architecture of the state are addressed.

The United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS), in collaboration with the ISS, hosted a workshop in Guinea-Bissau to present a series of policy briefs on key institutional reforms prepared by the ISS. The workshop contributed to the debate on the reforms envisaged by the Conakry Agreement and how they could be implemented as part of efforts to consolidate peace in Guinea-Bissau.
