Nigeria under Buhari: a new dawn?

What does Nigeria's remarkable presidential election mean for democracy, economic growth and stability in the country?

The March 2015 presidential election in Nigeria will be remembered as the most remarkable since independence in 1960. Not only was this election the most transparent in Nigeria’s history, but for the first time the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, openly conceded defeat to his opponent, Muhammadu Buhari.

Although the poll is billed as evidence that the era of turbulent and disputed elections has given way to a democratic awakening, the country faces numerous economic, developmental and security challenges.

This seminar will interrogate the implications of the election for democracy, politics and economic growth in Nigeria, and consider the challenges facing the country’s new leadership.
