28th AU Summit: what to expect?

Choosing the Commission’s new leaders will dominate proceedings, but several political and security crises urgently need attention.

The main order of business at next week’s African Union (AU) Summit is the election to fill the AU Commission’s top posts, notably the chairperson. The meeting of heads of state and foreign ministers in Addis Ababa from 25-31 January is also expected to cover issues such as the institutional reform of the AU proposed by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Morocco’s bid to re-join the AU. The political and security crises in the Gambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan will also likely feature.

This pre-summit seminar provides a platform to discuss these issues and consider some of the crises that the AU will be dealing with in the year ahead.
