The 2019–2023 coup wave in Africa resulted in four military-led regimes navigating transitions towards constitutional order: Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Gabon. The African Union and regional economic communities are using existing frameworks and mechanisms to support these transitions. However, they are struggling to enforce transition roadmaps and work with a fifth country, Niger, which also experienced a coup.
