Zimbabwe under Mnangagwa: what to watch out for

Will President Mnangagwa change course or continue on Mugabe’s path that destroyed Zimbabwe’s economy?

Zimbabwe may have a new president, but Emmerson Mnangagwa is a long-standing member of the ZANU-PF led government and its repressive machinery. Will his leadership mark a change of course or continue on the path set by Robert Mugabe, which has brought Zimbabwe to the brink of economic meltdown?

Many believe Zimbabwe’s parlous economy will compel President Mnangagwa to create a reformist government which will adopt measures to rescue the economy. However, with Mnangagwa merely serving out the remainder of Mugabe’s term and elections due before August 2018, there will considerable reluctance to implement the austerity measures required. The first months of Mnangawa’s leadership need to be scrutinised for signs of anti-democratic policy.
