Will the AU be fit for purpose in 2022?

How will decisions at the upcoming AU summit impact on the continent’s trajectory?

Africa’s governance and security challenges have been compounded by the disruptions brought about by COVID-19. As the African Union (AU) prepares for its 35th heads of state summit from 5–6 February in Addis Ababa, this seminar will consider which issues should feature prominently on the agenda, and how the continental body should respond to them.

The summit will include elections for all 15 members of the Peace and Security Council, the principal AU organ responsible for reducing conflicts in Africa. How will new members affect the AU’s handling of crises in 2022?
