South Africa is struggling with corruption, poor governance and mismanagement. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) party is in deep crisis. In the 2021 local government elections, ANC support fell below 50% for the first time since 1994. The party’s decline and low voter turnout represent a loss of confidence in the ANC and in the democratic project. Opposition parties haven’t yet filled the political void and the resulting legitimacy deficit poses a serious risk to South Africa’s hard-won democracy, stability and socio-economic development.
