What’s next for Africa after the AU summit?

This seminar will review peace and security decisions and issues emerging from the 35th meeting of African leaders.

At the 5–6 February African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, the continent’s leaders condemned the trend of unconstitutional changes of government and took decisions on Israel and COVID-19. The summit also elected 15 new members of the Peace and Security Council and kicked off the term of new AU chairperson, President Macky Sall from Senegal.

AU Commissioner of Peace and Security Amb Bankole Adeoye said Africa’s four main challenges are violent extremism, unconstitutional changes of government, complex political transitions and the impact of COVID-19. How will the AU tackle these problems?

This hybrid event co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University will discuss issues emerging from the summit.

Simultaneous English–French interpretation will be provided.
