Despite regional and international efforts, Burundi remains embroiled in a crisis that has seen hundreds killed and thousands fleeing the country seeking refuge.

In April 2015, Burundi’s ruling party announced President Pierre Nkurunziza as its candidate for presidential elections – and a third term in power – sparking widespread protests and crackdowns by state security forces. What is driving this continued crisis and what can be done about it?

Burundi experts will provide a comprehensive analysis of the situation, identifying key drivers and players behind the conflict. They will discuss lessons and opportunities for actors such as the African Union and United Nations, as well as civil society and the diplomatic community.
