What is at stake in Somaliland’s presidential elections?

The upcoming elections are more than just an important political milestone.

After many delays, presidential elections will finally be held in Somaliland on 13 November. President Silanyo will be stepping down, ensuring Somaliland’s third transfer of power in 14 years. Nonetheless, the stakes are high in what will be a closely contested election. The incoming leadership will oversee new international agreements and institutional reforms, which could have lasting ramifications for Somaliland.

Ahead of the electoral contest, this seminar will examine the upcoming election and launch a new ISS report on the topic, based on recent research in Somaliland.

The report will be available at the seminar.
