View on Africa: Somalia’s internal and external challenges

External influence, a lack of unity and major security deficiencies continue to plague the country.

It has been a tumultuous 2018 for Somalia so far. The Berbera port row has further damaged relations with Somaliland, AMISOM’s future remains in doubt and a cash seizure from the United Arab Emirates has led to a security training programme being abandoned. The ongoing violent conflict between Puntland and Somaliland, Federal Member States’ opposition to Mogadishu’s policies and Parliament’s dispute over the leadership of its Lower House only add to the country’s woes.

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Omar S Mahmood, Researcher, ISS Addis Ababa. He will discuss latest developments including links between Somalia’s internal disunity, its external influences and the current security situation.
