View on Africa: From euphoria to crisis in the Gambia

Can ECOWAS prevent post-electoral violence in the Gambia?

Outgoing President Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to recognise Adama Barrow’s victory in the December presidential elections has pushed the Gambia into a post-electoral crisis that threatens peace and stability in West Africa. With just three days left before Jammeh’s term ends on 19 January, will the crisis be resolved through peaceful or military  means?

This View of Africa will be presented by Paulin Maurice Toupane, Researcher at ISS Dakar. Maurice will analyse the latest developments, regional and international mediation efforts, as well as the risks of a possible military intervention.
