Political instability in the Republic of Congo has been rising since President Denis Sassou Nguesso was elected for a third term after a new constitution was adopted in November 2015. Since then, promised governance reforms have not been implemented and opposition leaders remain in detention. Can credible elections be held under current conditions?

In this View on Africa, Senior Researcher Fonteh Akum will explore the impact of the upcoming 16 July legislative elections on the deepening political crisis.
