Surveying Zimbabwe’s pre-poll electoral terrain

Against a backdrop of administrative and intra-party chaos, this seminar will discuss the 30 July elections.

For the first time since 2002 Zimbabwe’s general elections on 30 July will not primarily be a contest between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai. Although still expected to be a two horse race between incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa, an unprecedented 23 candidates are competing for the presidency. Ballot papers for parliament’s constituency polls will also carry an inordinate number of names.

This reflects the electoral administrative chaos and intra-party chaos which has characterised the last two polls and seems set to be repeated in 2018. This seminar will assess the electoral terrain and offer some prognoses for the outcome.
