Regional integration in Africa: lessons from ECOWAS

Understanding ECOWAS’ five decades of experience can make an immense contribution to integration in Africa.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is one of Africa’s most vibrant regional blocs. At the same time, it has faced major challenges – most recently the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali and their formation of the Alliance of Sahel States.

As ECOWAS celebrates its 50th anniversary under the theme ‘Stronger Together, for a Brighter Future’, what lessons can be learned on regional integration across the continent? This hybrid dialogue seeks to provide answers, with speakers considering the organisation’s successes and challenges.

This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Permanent Representation of ECOWAS to the African Union.
