Long route to a gender-responsive African maritime sector

Correcting the vast disparities will take much more than recruiting more women to work at sea.

The private and public sectors recognise the harmful impact of the deep gender disparities in Africa’s maritime space. But attempts to correct the inequalities rarely take account of gender groups’ different life experiences and needs or factors such as age, race and social status. As a result women, youth and other marginalised groups remain under-represented in the maritime industry.

This seminar will draw on a new ISS report to explore gender equality in Africa’s maritime sector. Speakers will discuss current industry practices as well as the recommendations made in the report.
