Lessons from Kenya’s fraught electronic visa policy

One year on, how did electronic visas affect integration, economic growth and mobility in Kenya and the region?

In January 2024, Kenya introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), replacing visa-on-arrival with a digital pre-approval system. Intended to streamline travel, it instead created many bureaucratic hurdles. Kenya has now exempted African nationals from getting ETAs, but concerns still remain.

This seminar will examine the policy’s impact on tourism, trade and regional integration within Africa’s broader free movement agenda.

This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), African Migration and Development Policy Centre (AMADPOC) and Kenya Institute of Migration Studies (KIMS).
