Keep them out: costs of South Africa’s migration policy

What are the consequences – intended and unintended – of a ‘risk-based’ approach to migration?

Migration in South Africa is a complex issue that is highly politicised and often volatile. As a continental migration hub, the country’s policies and practices impact many Africans. South Africa’s approach is to keep risks outside the country by securitising borders and focusing on restrictive measures.

This seminar will discuss the consequences of this risk-based approach – intended and unintended – on ordinary people. It will describe the disproportionate impact on Africans from neighbouring countries and how women, children and asylum seekers are put at risk.
