ISS Seminar, Pretoria: ISS Seminar: Ethiopia's Role in the Horn of Africa

Ethiopia is Africa’s second largest populated country and is located in a region where political instability, civil strife and interstate conflict have been defining features over the last few decades. The importance of Ethiopia to the region is not only in its unrivalled demographic weight and strong military influence in the region but also in the fact that its Capital, Addis Ababa, is the seat of key African diplomatic institutions such as the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU).

What role does Ethiopia play in terms of peace and security in the Horn of Africa?

Faced with security challenges across the border  (Eritrea, Somalia, North and South Sudan, among others), Ethiopia needs regional stability for its own domestic reasons. The balance between national and regional stability, however, can only be met in a concerted action of national and regional efforts. This seminar aims to examine Ethiopia’s role in the Horn of Africa within this strategic context.
