Illicit drug use, trafficking and violent extremism in the Lake Chad Region

Reducing drug trafficking and consumption has become imperative in the fight against violent extremism.

Field research reveals multiple linkages between drug trafficking, increased drug abuse and violent extremism in Boko Haram-affected areas. Although the extent to which trafficking finances Boko Haram is uncertain, evidence indicates that fighters are among the consumers of illicit drugs.

Speakers at this seminar will explore the impact of drug trafficking and drug abuse in the Lake Chad Basin region and possible responses.

This side event at the 5th Lake Chad Governors’ Forum is co-hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).
