Can Southern Africa get labour migration right?

SADC is developing progressive policies on the free movement of goods and people but implementation won’t be easy.

The African Union recognises the importance of free movement of people and goods in attaining development goals, but consistent policies and effective labour migration are still a long way off. For its part, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is drafting progressive policies that aim to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.

Drawing on a new ISS study in Southern Africa, this seminar looks at some of the challenges of establishing effective labour mobility and the implications of COVID-19 on this endeavour.
