Book launch: Fate of the Nation

The ANC’s choice of its next leader will determine South Africa’s fate.

What does South Africa’s future hold? The answer lies in who will be elected to lead the African National Congress (ANC) at the party’s national conference in December 2017. In his new book, Fate of the Nation, Jakkie Cilliers argues that the power struggle between the ‘traditionalists’ and the ‘reformers’ in the ANC has paralysed the party, leading to the inept leadership and poor service delivery that now plague the country.

Will the ANC split or be forced into an alliance with the opposition? Could the ANC lose power in the 2024 elections?

Using three scenarios for the future, Fate of the Nation examines whether South Africa will become more prosperous and less divided or remain highly unequal and generally poor.

Fate of the Nation is published by Jonathan Ball and the Institute for Security Studies. Copies will be on sale at the launch.
