Beyond UN-assessed funds: financing options for peace in Africa
Africa may be a step closer to accessing UN funds, but other means to mobilise resources are still needed.
The African Union (AU) and its regional economic communities have become first responders to crises, deploying around 27 peace support operations (PSOs) since the 2000s. But a lack of resources and logistical and administrative capacity limit their capabilities.
Accessing United Nations (UN)-assessed funds could be one solution to sustain AU PSOs. Recent recommendations by UN Secretary-General António Guterres create momentum for Africa to revive its bid to secure UN-assessed contributions, but the continent must secure alternative sources of finance.
