South Africa's role in post-conflict development and peacebuilding

This page showcases the publications and stakeholder feedback from the research undertaken during the two years of the DFiD peacebuilding project.

This project was aimed at contributing towards more effective South African engagement in post-conflict development and peacebuilding in Africa. With a particular focus on the potential role of the South African Development Partnership Agency (SADPA), the project evaluated South Africa’s domestic and global policy-making processes.

In its first year, the project looked at three case studies where South Africa has been involved in peacebuilding initiatives in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan to gather lessons learnt.

The project then went further to consider South Africa’s role as a global actor; specifically its role within multilateral engagements such as the United Nations, African Union, Southern African Development Community, as well as the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) grouping and the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) grouping. It also explored the role that the private sector can play in enhancing peacebuilding.
