Statement: Signing of a Memorandum of Undertanding Between the ISS and the Lake Victoria Basin Commission

The Institute for Security Studies has long standing collaboration with intergovernmental organisations in the Eastern Africa Region, particularly with the Eastern African Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO), the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Eastern Africa Standby Brigade (EASBRICOM). The collaboration with EAPCCO, among others, focuses on the establishment and the operationalisation of the Eastern Africa Protocol to Combat, Prevent and Eradicate Cattle Rustling and the project against environmental crime in eight Eastern African countries (ECP).

The purpose of the Memorandum of Undertanding (MoU) between the ISS and the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) is to provide a framework of cooperation and understanding and to facilitate collaboration between the ISS and LVBC to further their shared goals and objectives relating to environmental intelligence and security.

The ISS, through its office in Nairobi, will cooperate with the LVBC to provide relevant technical and expert support and advice for the development matters of the Commission, to undertake studies and analysis on comparative practices, and organise workshops, seminars, symposia and training programmes for enhancing the capacity of the LVBC and associated structures on environmental security and related matters.
