The DCP will be organizing an Expert Roundtable workshop entitled “Strategies for the Implementation of a Union Government for Africa”, on 5th and 6th November, 2008 at Kuriftu Resort, Debre Zeit, Ethiopia.

The principal objective of the roundtable is to contribute to the debate on the Union Government for Africa expected to take place during the next AU Summit in January 2009. In more specific terms, the roundtable workshop aims at:

  • A review of the current status of the integration processes.

  • Identification of the institutional and political challenges facing the implementation of a Union Government for Africa.

  • Recommendations on the way forward

  • Ascertain a suitable harmonized framework for the Union Government that meets the above recommendations

The DCP programme strives to complement and support the work of the African Union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. The ISS Expert Roundtable workshop is part of the DCP effort at consensus-building by providing a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates and dialogues on the peace and security agenda. The aim is to stimulate quality discussion, in-depth and constructive interaction between participants.
