1994-2004 Crime Graphs
Crime levels in South Africa remain one of the key challenges facing the country. The annual release of the crime statistics by the South African Police Service (SAPS) provides detailed information on the levels of reported crime. Although these statistics are not the only indicators of actual crime levels in the country, they are extremely useful when trying to monitor and understand South Africa’s crime rate. However, reading and understanding crime statistics is not always easy.

With this in mind, the ISS has graphed all national and provincial crime trends from 1994 - 2004. This visual representation will assist the reader in making sense of these crucial statistics. The different crimes are group provincially and nationally. Most crimes are represented as actual number of reported incidents. Specific crimes have however been additionally represented as a ratio of crimes per 100 000 of the population.
