In October the ISS website was awarded a bronze medal by South Africa’s top website review body, SA Web Awards. An overall score of 75% was achieved for the content, layout, functionality and overall appeal of the website.

In April 2013 ISS launched a dynamic, picture-rich and visually appealing website with improved accessibility that makes searching and downloading faster and more effective. The new website is compatible with mobile phones and tablets and the improved quality of articles and information adds to the overall appeal.

These improvements were recognised by SA Web Awards which was launched in 2003 and aims to acknowledge South Africa's top web design and development talent. Through a system of peer review, web professionals rate around 20 websites each month. ISS’s bronze medal is a notable achievement considering the high standards set by the judges. Of the 474 websites evaluated since January 2012, only 27 silver awards and 180 bronze awards were given out, with none achieving gold.

The appeal of the ISS website is confirmed by user figures. The number of people visiting the site more than once increased by 16% in the past six months compared to the same period last year. As important is the 30% increase in the number of pages viewed, which means visitors are exploring the content more. Interest in the ISS Today, the organisation’s flagship online publication series, has soared this year with double the number of users reviewing the topical articles than during the same period in 2012. The ISS Today exemplifies the overall improvements to the website. Based on the timely analysis of current security issues facing Africa, ISS Today articles have become a sought-after source for press commentary and analysis, re-published across the globe.
