What to expect at the AU summit

This seminar considers key issues for the summit and launches ISS papers on Morocco and the AU.

African leaders will likely deal with three key issues at the African Union (AU) summit that starts next week in Addis Ababa: implementing AU reforms agreed to in January 2017; electing the 10 members of the AU Peace and Security Council for a two-year term; and the protocol on the free movement of people negotiated last year.

This seminar will consider what is at stake and launch two new ISS papers on Morocco’s entry into the AU, and the links between the AU’s African Governance Architecture and the Architecture for Peace and Security in Africa.
