What’s behind renewed piracy off Somalia’s coast?

Recent attacks in the Western Indian Ocean are a reminder that root causes of piracy remain unresolved.

Several serious pirate attacks in early November off the coast of Somalia raise concerns about a resurgence of this infamous threat. This seminar will scrutinise the attacks and the enduring vulnerabilities of shipping in the region. Speakers will also consider the plight of coastal Somali communities whose livelihoods depend on ever-decreasing fish stocks.

Counter-piracy measures at sea are vital, but persistent challenges in both offshore and onshore governance must be overcome to ensure piracy is eradicated rather than just suppressed.
