South Africa has not experienced a major terrorist attack since 2000, but how safe is the country considering the global threat posed by the Islamic State and al-Qaeda?

Reports of terrorist cells and an increasing number of South Africans leaving to join the Islamic State in Syria are cause for concern. The recent arrest in Johannesburg of four young people who were allegedly plotting terrorist attacks in South Africa is a case in point.

This seminar will explore the threat of violent extremism in South Africa and assess the government’s capability to respond.
