President Cyril Ramaphosa has a tough job ahead of him. A priority must be reversing the damage done to law enforcement and intelligence agencies under Jacob Zuma’s presidency. Since 2012, arrest and conviction rates have plummeted. Murder, armed robbery, organised crime and corruption have substantially increased. But with better police leadership, this situation can be reversed.
This View on Africa is presented by Gareth Newham, Head of the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme at ISS. He will discuss how the president and new police minister, Bheki Cele, can turn South Africa’s policing crisis around.
