View on Africa: risks loom over Mali’s 2018 elections

As the country struggles to deal with a security crisis, can election-related violence be avoided?

Mali is due to hold presidential elections in August next year against a backdrop of polarised politics. Most recently, tensions grew during debates on the revision of the country’s constitution.

The security situation in Mali, considered to be the epicentre of the Sahel crisis, has also worsened. The persistent terrorist threat has expanded from the north to the centre of the country.

This View on Africa is presented by Baba Dakono, an ISS Researcher based in Bamako. He will analyse the risks looming over the 2018 elections and propose measures to avoid election-related violence.
