View on Africa: restoring trust in SA’s prosecution service

Rebuilding the National Prosecuting Authority’s credibility will take more than appointing a new head.

To uphold the rule of law in South Africa, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) must be independent and credible. But it has fallen victim to political meddling, costing it the trust of the public. After the recent Constitutional Court ruling, the country looks forward to the appointment of a new and credible prosecutions head. What more must be done to rebuild this vital institution?

This View on Africa is presented by Gareth Newham, head of Justice and Violence Prevention, ISS Pretoria. He will discuss priority areas to improve public trust in the prosecution service.
