African maritime security, development and governance got a significant boost at the special African Union (AU) summit in Lomé, Togo on 15 October. That 17 heads of state attended the summit demonstrates the importance of maritime policy making in Africa.

The summit produced a much anticipated maritime charter, which contains binding agreements on how states parties will cooperate in future. The summit and the charter are important milestones, but what comes next?

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Tim Walker, Researcher in the Peace Operations and Peacebuilding division at the ISS. He will discuss the new charter, as well as challenges and opportunities for states in 2017 and beyond.
