The army has been deployed but what else is necessary to end violence and promote safety?

On 18 July, a battalion from the South African National Defence Force was deployed to parts of the Cape Flats in Cape Town. The move followed calls from communities and the Western Cape Government after years of unresolved violent crime, much of it gang-related. While some celebrate the arrival of soldiers on the streets, others warn that they distract from the holistic, structural interventions that are needed.

This seminar brings community and youth voices into the conversation. Speakers will talk about life in affected areas, and the ‘big picture’ problems that must be fixed for violence to stop and communities to thrive.
