Restoring trust: pathways to building police integrity in South Africa

How can South Africa reduce high levels of police corruption and build trust in the police?

Allegations of corruption at the highest levels of the South African Police Service (SAPS) are currently under scrutiny at two major policing inquiries. But what is the scale and nature of police corruption in the country? What steps have been taken to tackle the problem, and how should we evaluate whether these initiatives are working?

This seminar will discuss police corruption and launch a new Institute for Security Studies (ISS) report on how to strengthen responses.

Moderator: Lizette Lancaster, Head, Justice and Violence Prevention, ISS

Panelists:

  • Gareth Newham, Special Advisor to the Minister of Police
  • Dr Bila, Acting Head, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (TBC)
