Looking back, looking forward: SA in the UN Security Council

At the half-way mark of its term on the council, what lessons can SA take into 2020?

For many, the first year of South Africa’s two-year term on the UN Security Council was a test of the Ramaphosa government’s commitment to international peace and security, the global rules-based order, and its prioritisation of the African continent. This seminar will assess how the country has fared considering changing global power dynamics as well as the strained relationship between the council’s two other elected African member states.

Speakers will reflect on a new ISS research report based on dozens of interviews including in New York and Addis Ababa. The event also provides an opportunity to discuss the South African government’s views and expectations for the remainder of  2020.
