ISS/CIC Book Launch: Annual Review of Global Peace Operations 2007

ISS/CIC Book Launch: Annual Review of Global Peace Operations 2007
Pretoria, 25 June 2007

The Center on International Cooperation at New York University in cooperation with the Institute for Security Studies is pleased to invite you to the launch of the Annual Review of Global Peace Operations 2007. The Annual Review is a product of the Center on International Cooperation at New York University. The second in an annual series, the Annual Review 2007 represents the most comprehensive reference document extant on global peace operations. It brings together detailed analysis and statistics on over forty UN and non-UN operations ongoing during 2006, enabling informed discourse and policy making on this critical global enterprise. The 2007 Review presents both the statistical evidence and analysis that will enable international organizations, state actors and academics to understand and adequately address the mounting need for inter-institutional cooperation in peace operations.

In 2006, Africa played host to 75.3% of UN military personnel deployed globally. At the same time, Africa remains the UN’s second largest supplier of troops at 25.7%; the highest being South Asia which provides 42.9%.  The African contribution to the UN comes at a time of increased activity by the African Union with its continued peace operation in Darfur, Sudan and more recently Somalia. Throughout its engagement in Darfur, the AU has entered into varying degrees of partnerships with the UN, EU, and NATO; providing invaluable lessons for future cooperation between the world’s main peace operation platforms.

CIC aims to use the launch event to:

  1. Offer a clear picture of the current scale of UN peacekeeping, its contribution to stability in Africa

  2. Promote discussion of practical and operational challenges and opportunities in developing viable partnerships between the AU, UN, EU and NATO; against the back drop of the proposed UN-AU hybrid force in Darfur.
