ISS Seminar: Security During the Soccer World Cup in 2010: How Ready is South Africa?

ISS Seminar: Security During the Soccer World Cup in 2010: How Ready is South Africa?
Pretoria, 25 November 2008

Hosted by the ISS Crime, Justice and Politics Programme

Over the last few months there were much speculation, especially in the media, that, due to our crime situation and other challenges, the Soccer World Cup may be moved elsewhere. Some even believe that FIFA already has a plan B in this regard. Given our high crime rate and criticisms against the Criminal Justice System, in particular the police, there is a perception that South Africa will not be able to provide adequate security for the large number of visitors expected in the country during this event. In addition, there are fears that the security services will focus so much on the security of the event that the safety of ordinary South Africans will be compromised.

The FIFA draw for the Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009 takes places over the weekend just before the seminar and since the Confederations Cup is considered as a ‘trial run’ for 2010, also from a security point of view, the seminar is viewed as a timely opportunity to engage the relevant authorities on these issues.

Speakers: Mr Wally Rhoode, Operational Commander, Safety and Security Directorate in the Local Organising Committee, Deputy Provincial Commissioner William Mpembe from the South African Police Service (SAPS) in North West Province and Assistant Commissioner Ben Groenewald from SAPS Head Office in Pretoria, to talk about our readiness in relation to security during the Soccer World Cup. Mr Rhoode will provide an LOC overview, Com Groenewald will present a national police perspective and Com Mpembe will provide a provincial police perspective.
