ISS Seminar: Mbeki`s Dramatic Departure From the Union Buildings - What Implications for South Africa?
Pretoria, 25 September 2008

Hosted by the ISS Crime, Justice and Politics Programme

This past weekend will go down as a turning point in the history of post-apartheid South Africa. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) decided to terminate President Thabo Mbeki’s tenure just a few months before the 2009 national elections.

Now that Mbeki has himself said “I depart,” some critical questions remain: What mark is the ANC decision going to leave on the face of the country’s history? What lessons should we draw from the ANC`s decision?  To what extent has the decision of the ANC dented the credibility of our body politic? Is our political system firm enough to withstand this turmoil?

To answer these and other questions, the Institute for Security Studies has secured the participation of some of South Africa’s top political analysts at a seminar arranged as follows:

Speakers:

  • Prof Steven Friedman: Centre for Democracy, University of Johannesburg and Rhodes University
  • Prof Shadrack Gutto: Director, Centre for African Renaissance Studies, UNISA
