ISS Seminar: China's Role in Africa: A European Perspective Addis Ababa

The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the ISS Addis Ababa Office would like to cordially invite you to a public seminar entitled: China’s Role in Africa: A European Perspective.

Although Europe is still Africa’s largest cooperation partner, China has dramatically emerged as a significant stakeholder in Africa within a very short period of time. Though naturally driven by specific geopolitical and economic interests, China has pursued an active official cooperation policy and made diverse and widespread direct investments. China’s engagement has offered African states real opportunities for sustainable economic development. The seminar is organised to critically assess the structure, principles, effectiveness, impacts, advantages and shortcomings of Chinese cooperation with Africa. It will also look into the need for Europe to understand the nature of China’s growing engagement in Africa, and to even initiate regular consultations and entry points for meaningful collaborative activities. Finally, it will identify the future trends and common challenges of trilateral cooperation between Africa, Europe and China.

The DCP programme strives to complement and support the work of the African Union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. The ISS Public Seminar Series is part of the DCP effort at consensus-building by providing a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates and dialogues on the African peace and security agenda. The aim is to stimulate quality discussion, in-depth and constructive interaction between participants. Our presenter will be Dr. Peter Roell who is the president of the Institute for Strategy, Policy, Security and Economic Consultancy (ISPSW).
