ISS Roundtable: The Copenhagen Process on the Handling of Detainees in International Military Operations
Addis Ababa, 3 March 2008

The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the ISS Addis Ababa office would like to cordially invite you to the Round Table on the Copenhagen Process on the Handling of Detainees in International Military Operations, Addis Ababa, 3 March 2008.

The handling of detainees has increasingly become a day-to-day challenge for peacekeeping forces as well as a long-term political challenge for all countries wishing to contribute to peacekeeping operations. This roundtable seeks to strengthen the understanding of African contingents assigned for peacekeeping operations about the legal issues surrounding military operations, helping them to determine the law applicable in a given situation and to understand how best to integrate it into military training and procedures.

The Copenhagen Conference initiated by Denmark generally strives to establish a common platform for the handling of detainees, which all countries participating in international military operations can use regardless of the character of these operations. It also aims at promoting a frank discussion and informed interaction among participants on detaining individuals in peacekeeping operations.

The panellists will include a speaker from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and Dr. Kithure Kindiki, the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Nairobi.

Venue: Semien Salon at the Sheraton Hotel

Time: 14h00 – 17h00
